With New England Revolution
Former CSA Academy player first to sign professional contract in Major League Soccer

March 4, 2013 - Former CSA Academy player Donnie Smith signed a professional contract with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer (MLS). Smith becomes the first CSA player to ever sign a contract in MLS. He played from 2007-2009 in the CSA Academy playing primarily in midfield but also up front. After finishing at CSA he went on to have four successful years at UNC Charlotte where he was named Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year during his senior season.  He was drafted 21st over all by the Revolution at the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.

“It is great to see Donnie sign a professional contract with New England,” said Richard Butler, CSA Academy Director. “He has always demonstrated the endeavor and application to be a professional player ever since he was in our Academy and throughout his time at UNCC. He is a wonderful player and person and we all wish him the best here. I look forward to the next step for him which will be to make his professional debut in MLS.”

Ben Weathers Commits To Gardner-Webb University
Seventh CSA Academy player to commit to a Division One school

Ben Weathers has committed to attend and play soccer at Gardner-Webb University in the fall of 2013. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are members of the Big South Conference and are coached by Head Coach Tony Setzer. Last year the team was 4-14-2 (W-L-T) overall and 3-5-2 in conference play. Gardner-Webb is located in Boiling Springs, North Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Weathers, a wide midfielder, becomes the seventh player in the CSA Academy to commit to a NCAA Division One program this year.

Weathers said: “Playing at CSA for many years has been a rewarding experience. The quality of the coaches, the intensity of the training sessions, and the high level of competition in the games have contributed to making me a better player. I have had the good fortune to play for top-notch coaches like Richard Butler, Mark Silke, Rob Dalton, and Phil Hufstader, who have all challenged me to do my best on and off the field.  Having the opportunity to play at the Academy level this year has allowed me to take my game to next level. I decided to play at Gardner-Webb because I feel like it is a good fit for me both academically and athletically. The team is a close-knit group of guys, and the coaches and players made me feel comfortable immediately during my visit. I am also impressed with the Sport Management program, which will be my field of study. I look forward to a strong finish at CSA as well as to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead at Gardner-Webb.”

Richard Butler, CSA Academy Director said: “I’m very glad for Ben. He has worked very hard to get into the Academy Program here at CSA and worked his way through our developmental program. I wish him all the best at Gardner-Webb.”

About the Program
Created in 2007,  the Development Academy was established to primarily focus on youth player development in the United States. The league consisted of 64 elite youth soccer clubs from around the country in its inaugural season. Each team is comprised by geographic proximity, with two age groups (U-15/16 & U-17/18). These 64 teams were divided into eight conferences with each team playing approxiately 30 home and away matches during an eight-month season.

Currently in its fifth season, the program has expanded to 78 clubs competing in 10 geographically-based divisions. Although some attributes have changed during the past four seasons, the basic mission and priniples remain intact: increased focus on training, meaningful competition and providing a direct connection to U.S. National Team programming.

Developing the Next Generation
U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy program is driven by the game and its players, coaches and referees. This game-centric approach allows for long-term development to occur through a deep understanding of what makes players successful around the world. As the sport of soccer grows in the United States, young players in our country need the proper environment to compete against the world’s elite. The U.S. Soccer Development Academy program provides the optimum developmental environment for the nation’s top youth soccer players, coaches and referees by emphasizing development through quality training and limited, meaningful competition.

Meaningful Training
Academy teams spend a greater amount of time focused on training to improve as individuals and as a team. The teams and players receive direct feedback and evaluations from National Team Staff and ProZone video analysis. To round out the complete training environment, Academy teams are tested in their physical capabilities using the SPARQ testing methodology and their hydration levels by Gatorade. They also receive a SPARQ training curriculum for soccer-specific athletic training and Nutrition and Hydration recommendations from Gatorade’s Sports Science Institute. Each athlete then gains a greater understanding of how they compare physically against their peers and what they need to do to achieve their optimum performance levels.

Competitive Environment
The Academy program features teams from the top youth clubs from around the country. Each Academy team plays approximately 30 regular season games to ensure all games are meaningful. Games are also played according to FIFA’s Law of the Game and officiated by a pool of the nation’s top young referees in order to prepare players for the next level of competition. National Team Scouts regularly attend Academy games, so players are evaluated over the course of the season and in their natural positions allowing for better player assessment.

Early Success
As the program enters its fifth year, it has already dramatically impacted the player development process in the United States. At the end of 2011, almost half of all players involved in the youth national team player pool since 2007 have come from within the Academy program and approximately 75% of each graduating class from the Academy participates in college soccer the following fall. Virtually all college programs use the Academy program as a scouting vehicle and the program has received increased attention from professional scouts representing domestic and international clubs.

Notable alumni from the program have flooded the domestic and international professional scene. Recent internationals include: Josh Gatt (Molde FC), Sean Cunningham (Derby County), Marc Pelosi and Villyan Bijev (Liverpool). Many domestic players are continuing their career in the MLS, including Bill Hamid (DC United) and Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls). We have more to look forward to after a successful 2012 MLS Super Draft in which Andrew Wenger (PA Classics, Montreal Impact) was taken as the first drafted player, Kelyn Rowe went third (Crossfire premier, New England Revolution) and Andrew Jean-Baptiste (Albertson SC) went 8th to the Portland Timbers.
