CSA Aligns with CDL for pre-USSDA Program

Charlotte Soccer Academy Align with Newly Formed Carolina Development League

With the Development Academy path starting at U13, CDL is poised to track, prepare select players between 9 to 11 years old

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In its continued efforts to make player development a top priority, Charlotte Soccer Academy announced that it is one of six North Carolina clubs to align with the newly formed Carolina Development League (CDL), which is poised to advance the state’s 10-11 year-old player with the top standards for training, matches and events.

The new league – including Charlotte Soccer Academy (CSA), Carolina Rapids (CRSA) Discoveries Soccer Club (DSC), North Carolina Fusion (NCF), Queen City Mutiny (QCM) and North Carolina FC (NCFC) – will align player development with the standards of the Development Academy Program and better prepare the player for the highest level of play.

“We created a league for the U11 Pre-DA player last year and this is just an expansion to include the 12s for next year,” explained Steve Gummer, CSA’s Development Academy Director. “It is most important for our members to know that the standards and the level — from both a training and match day standpoint (for the players) — will remain the same as we strive for excellence within the program.” Our philosophy on player and team development is to provide a path way from grass roots to the highest USSDA Level.

Aimed to better connect individual player pathways for young players from Zone 1 to Zone 2, the CDL will be instrumental in integrating players into each DA club at early ages.

“In essence, the DA pathway now starts at U13, not U12 — and our current 12s will move up to U13 next year,” continued Gummer “What we've created is a league within North Carolina — to play local — adhering to standards that were created by U.S. Soccer and the DA.” US Soccer are entrusting the USSDA clubs across the Nation to continue the good work by administering the leagues on a feasible geographical reach.

Added Gummer : “The main thing to understand is that U.S. Soccer is de centralizing 12s from under their player development pyramid from a development standpoint and putting that onus and responsibility on the local clubs, but the game day format is not going to change and the philosophy around those age groups will not change. This is just a matter of the [DA] saying, ‘Let’s impact change locally now that we’ve set the standard, and the local clubs govern it from here.”

Charlotte Soccer Academy was formed in 2009 by the merger of South Charlotte Soccer Association and Charlotte Soccer Club. CSA is the only full-service club in the greater Charlotte area, offering our members opportunities to play and develop at all ages and levels: Recreation, 9U/10U Youth Academy, Classic, Southern Regional Premier League, and US Soccer Development Academy. CSA has grown to become seven geographic divisions: CSA-Charlotte, CSA-Matthews/Mint-Hill, CSA-North/Cabarrus, CSA-Huntersville, CSA-Palisades, CSA-Uptown and CSA-Palmetto.

The mission of Charlotte Soccer Academy includes a five-pronged philosophy:

  • An integrated soccer experience – Access to all levels of play.

  • Quality coaching and instruction – State-of-the-art curriculum for our players.

  • Reasonable fees – Leverage buying power, sponsorships and size to provide the best value for our members

  • Investment in player development at all levels – Charlotte Soccer Academy’s objective is for each player to have a balanced and fulfilling experience regardless of the level of play.

  • A family-oriented environment – Players and staff will make friendships that will last a lifetime.

It is the club’s philosophy to create a style of soccer for all of our teams that enhances possession of the ball through all departments of the field. At a degree which is highest for all levels of play, for players to enjoy the game through constant involvement in the game. Developing a complete understanding of roles and responsibilities of every position and formations, in doing so we expect all of our players to be technically and tactically proficient, and be confident with the ball in order to execute our playing philosophy .We encourage independent thinkers and players who show confidence in their ability to solve individually and team problems both on and off the field, to express themselves with creativity in everything they do. We encourage a holistic approach to the development of our players in order to develop the complete person. Our philosophy is to develop players who are exciting, dynamic, and creative in attack and organized patient and resilient in defense. We encourage high levels of fitness and mental strength to execute our philosophy both in and out of possession in the transitional moments of the game.

Following a comprehensive review of elite player development in the United States and around the world, U.S. Soccer created the Development Academy in 2007. The Academy Program's philosophy is based on increased training, less total games, and more meaningful games using international rules of competition. In the Fall of 2017, the Academy expanded programming to include a Girls Development Academy. The Academy has 197 total clubs, comprised of teams across six age groups in the boy’s program: U-12, U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16/17, and U-18/19. The Academy Program focuses on positively impacting everyday club environments to assist in maximizing youth player development across the country. The Academy values individual development of elite players over winning trophies and titles. The Academy sets the standard for elite environments for youth soccer clubs nationwide and is a part of U.S. Soccer's global leadership position in youth soccer that will impact thousands of players.
